Out of the Blue

“Edwin, I think I’m falling in love with you.”

Edwin doesn’t know what move he should do. He could see the blue car fast approaching and now only seconds away from him. He stared blankly to the car as his body felt pain. Then, he felt like he was flying with his body numbing the pain. He felt so peaceful and hadn’t experienced this before. Not until his body touched the rough surface of the sidewalk. He opened his eyes. He could see faces circled him. A moment later, he can’t see anything. He was floating at the darkest night. Blackness filled his sight. He can only hear his heartbeats slower. Seconds passed and his heart was frozen.
A week before the accident, he broke up with his girlfriend. He ended their relationship after discovering that his girl is dating another man.
Not knowing where his feet would take him he left the restaurant. He doesn’t want to go home. He wanted someone to talk to. He needs that someone who will surely listen and understood him.
He wanted someone to tell him how unfortunate he was. Cold winds surrounded him while walking during that peaceful night. After a while, he stopped walking. He noticed that he was at the entrance of a village that was few meters away from the restaurant. The sign read “Kalye Burgos.” He then realized that this same street was where a friend from high school is residing. “Shane,” he said.
He thought twice as he pushed the button of the doorbell. Is he still residing here? What if he had already forgotten me? Minutes had passed when Shane came out of the house to see who the visitor was. Shane’s eyes widened as he saw Edwin standing at their gate. Edwin could notice how his friend was surprised.
“Shane, am I disturbing you?”
“No, actually I’m about to call friends nearby. Being alone at my house makes me bore. What made you come here? I am not expecting an old friend to come here.” Shane opened the gate to let Edwin pass.
“I broke up with my girlfriend.”
Few minutes and they were at Shane’s room.
“Shane, I broke up with Joy a while ago,” he said while emptying a bottle of beer.
“Why? What happened?”
He was now covering his face with his hand.
“I saw her dating another guy.”
“Are they really dating? What if that guy was only her cousin?” Shane was aware how Edwin loved that girl. He recalled how much effort he did while courting Joy during their high school years.
He looked at Shane. “Where in the world can you see a girl kissing her cousin lips to lips?”
“Have you confronted her?”
Shane could now see tears slowly flowing from Edwin’s angry eyes.
“I moved close to them. She introduced me to that guy as her best friend,” he stated while staring down at the floor.
Edwin can’t forget what happened that night when he saw her girlfriend kissing that man in the restaurant. Thoughts kept on playing on his mind. He approached to their table while watching how Joy’s eyes widened at the same time as she saw him.
“I’m not expecting to see you here Joy. Who’s he?” he uttered as he stared differently at her eyes.
“Edwin he’s Jerey,” said by the surprised girl. He had read what her eyes are telling him. They are saying “sorry.”
Still staring at Joy, the guy interrupted.
“Pare, I think you’re disturbing us. See, we are having our date here?”
He again gulped a bottle but failed emptying it. Shane stared at him and notices that his smooth face had turned to red. Then assisted him while he rested his body in the bed. He moaned and whispered. “Why did you do this to me?” Tears were revealed from his eyes. Shane was surprised after what Edwin’s next move. He held Shane’s face, stared at it and kissed him.
His memory came back to his unforgettable experience at high school.
“Edwin, I think I’m falling in love with you,” Shane nervously told his feelings to his best friend. Now, he waited for his reaction. Edwin didn’t know how to react. His mind was telling him thing that he can’t understand. Silence reined after his fist smashed Shane’s face.
“Hindi tayo talo, Pare.”
Shane knows the consequences that he might face after what he did. He knew that he’d lose their friendship. No one can tell how he felt after the unpleasant incident. Edwin has new set of friends and courted Joy.
The next morning, Edwin was awoken by his headache. As he opened his eyes he could see the ceiling of that strange room. Ah, yes, I’m at Shane’s room. He saw Shane’s pictures hanging at the wall which were colored with shades of blue. He turned his head to his computer. He could see at the computer’s wallpaper Shane hugging a guy. He must be his present boyfriend. He then looked at Shane. You will be my best friend forever.
He woke him up. “I have to go. I have to call Joy.”
Silence filled the room as he pretended that he was still sleeping. Had he forgotten what happened last night? Shane heard the door groan as it opened. He knew Edwin was staring at him. Then he heard the door closed.
He received a call from Edwin a week after.
“Pare, good news! Joy has forgiven me!”
His ears were not accepting any words anymore after hearing the news. Edwin said it was good news but for him it was the worst news he had heard for that day. Shane ended the call while Edwin was still talking and telling details about the news. Shane watched his view in front of the mirror in his room. Why can’t he realize? He recalled what happened when he told his feelings to Edwin. No, it would not be happening again. He then punched the mirror, which caused it to break, and his fist to bleed. He then hurried down to the garage where his blue car stayed for months.
Edwin is waiting for a taxi. He will meet Joy at the town plaza. Suddenly, a blue car is approaching to his direction. Blood were scattered at the sidewalk where Edwin’s body fell. He was hurried to the nearest hospital but doctors failed to save his life. Witnesses told the investigators that the car was colored blue but has no plate card.
Primetime news on TV reported later that night that a dead body was found at the garage of the house at Kalye Burgos. Investigators said that he poisoned himself and died. At his side was the blue car.
II. SHADES
Joy kissed Jerey’s lips but after that passionate kiss, she was surprised to see Edwin in the corner of the restaurant.
Edwin!
She stared while Edwin walked toward them.
How could I explain this?
She almost shivered upon hearing Edwin’s voice. “I am not expecting to see you here Joy. Who’s he?”
I must not show any guilt. “Edwin he’s Jerey,” she said staring at him. She could sense his anger by just staring at his eye.
Jerey interrupted. “Pare, I think you’re disturbing us. See, we are having our date here!”
No, Edwin! Don’t tell him. I need him.
“Sorry.” He left.
“Excuse me, I left my purse in the car. I’ll just get it,” she said leading outside the restaurant.
She saw Edwin and hurried to reach him. She called him. He stopped. He didn’t face her.
“Edwin, sorry I…”
“That you didn’t expect that I would be here?” Edwin, still, turned his head.
She doesn’t know what to answer.
“That I’d never know that you are dating someone? That I would never feel that I don’t love you?”
“No! Edwin, you love me! You misunderstood everything! Jerey and I are…”
“No. It’s over Joy. It’s over.”
She watched Edwin as he continued walking. Without stopping him, tears flowed through her face. She stared blankly at the dark part of the road where Edwin’s image faded.
You didn’t understand. I need Jerey to support my family. You didn’t know. I know you don’t know. I’m a whore, Edwin! Its impossible that you know that. Edwin, you are the one I love. I love you.
Joy called Edwin that night. It took four times before the call was answered. Unexpectedly, she heard not Edwin’s voice.
“Hello? Can I talk to Jerey?” Joy thought its just his barkada.
“Maybe, if I’ll woke him up.”
“Who are you?”
“This is Shane.”
“Shane. It sounds familiar. A! You were his best friend in high school, am I right? You’re the one who confessed that you love him.”
Shane ended the call and turned off Edwin’s cellphone.
Joy never received any call from Edwin several days after. A week has passed when Edwin finally answered her call.
“Edwin!”
No answer.
“I love you. Please forgive me.”
Still, no answer.
“I see. You and Shane. Damn that Shane! Damn you two! Humanda kayong dalawa!”
Edwin called Shane an hour after. He thought about this many times, he will tell Shane that Joy and him are back together just to keep his best friend to stop worrying.
Edwin’s call was frustrating. While staring at his reflection in the mirror, Shane heard someone was knocking in the door beside his garage. It was Joy.
“Hi.”
“Come in, would you like something to drink?”
“Yes, can I have a coffee?”
Shane made two cups of coffee and put it in the table in front of Joy. “Do you want something to eat?”
“Sure, anything that you have is okay.”
Joy checked if Shane couldn’t see her while putting the bluish powder to Shane’s cup of coffee.
Shane’s cell phone ringed. It was a text from Edwin. “Be careful. Someone is planning to harm us.” He replied: “It’s okay. Who might it be? By the way Joy is here.”
He returned to the table and took a sip from his cup. It was almost empty when his cell phone ringed again. “It’s Joy, be careful with her.”
He looked at Joy, he saw her with that different smile. Suddenly, his heart stopped beating he can’t breathe. His mouth spurted white liquid. Now, his surroundings were totally black. He was dead in a moment.
Joy got Shane’s car’s key and turned to the garage. Edwin you’re next.
